Planning your Route to College

Be sure that you are enrolled in courses that will prepare you for the rigor of college. In many high schools, these courses are referred to as college prep. Taking these courses and doing well in them will in most cases keep you from having to take any remediation classes in your first year of college. This will set you on the path to graduate in 4 years. Your final high school transcript should consist of the following:

  • 4 years of English
  • 4 years of Mathematics (through Algebra II, Trigonometry or higher)
  • 2-4 years of Foreign Language
  • 3-4 years of Laboratory Science
  • 2-4 years of Social Studies or History
  • 1 year of Fine Arts

Are you in route to complete the final transcript above or better? Do you have the ability to take Honors, Accelerated, IB (International Baccalaureate) or AP (Advanced Placement) level courses? Start the conversation with your school counselor. Prepare for your meeting by writing questions and keeping notes on the next page.
