Who is Bob Carr?

THE BEGINNING

When Robert O. “Bob” Carr graduated from Lockport Township High School in 1963, he received a $250 scholarship and a plaque from the Lockport Woman’s Club. Coming from humble means in rural Illinois and surviving an abusive father who spent time in prison, this scholarship had a powerful impact on Bob - not just the money, but the fact that some people finally believed in him.

He decided then and there that if he was ever in a position to give back, he would do so.

A 1963 graduate of Lockport (IL) Township High School, Mr. Carr graduated from the University of Illinois with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics in three years. In his fourth year, he earned a master’s degree in computer science.

Bob became a successful entrepreneur, founding Heartland Payment Systems, a Fortune 1000 debit- and credit-card transaction company focused on supporting small businesses to advance their payment systems. The company went public, a milestone for Bob and his team, in 2005. With that early success, he began to make good on his promise to give back to others. In 2003, he devoted his wealth to founding Give Something Back (known as Give Back), and later established a social enterprise payment processing company, Beyond, to further support it.

BUSINESS SUCCESS

After many years of struggling in business, Mr. Carr struck it big. As the founder and chief executive of Heartland Payment Systems, a payments company focused on small businesses, he had become a wealthy man. And he kept his vow to help students who had endured hardship. He set out to build a national program that guides students toward long-term success within a supportive community.

TIME TO GIVE BACK

In 2003, he founded Give Back. The organization offers a comprehensive approach that includes mentorship, academic coaching, and scholarships, all towards the goal of supporting students in their pursuit of a sustainable family wage. Starting as early as middle school, Give Back provides students with college readiness programs, financial aid workshops, and career exploration opportunities. Their mission is to break the cycle of poverty by ensuring that students not only attend college but also graduate prepared to contribute positively to their communities.

To date, Give Back has provided mentoring and college scholarships to more than 2,000 students who have endured significant adversities, including experienced in the child welfare system, homelessness, traumatic crimes, the incarceration of a parent. Mr. Carr has invested more than $100,000,000 of his fortune in Give Back.
